ZF-5/MP5 Magazines: FAQs

The ZF-5 and MP5 magazines we sell here at Zenith Firearms exhibit a high level of quality as well as several shooter-friendly features.

As a result of their popularity, we rounded up some of the more common questions associated with these magazines and answered them here.

See if your question is answered below and if not, feel free to get in touch with us directly and let us know what it is.

Do ZF-5 Mags Work with the MP5?

Yes, our ZF-5 magazines are compatible with the HK MP 5, as well as with other MP 5 variants including the MP5K, MP5SD, SP5, SP5K, and SP89. They are also compatible with MP5 clones. Obviously they are also compatible with many of the 9mm platforms we produce here, including but not limited to the ZF-5 and ZF5-P.

They are also compatible with other MP5-style platforms that utilize a roller-delayed blowback action. If you have any questions about compatibility before you purchase, get in touch with us.

What Sorts of Maintenance Do MP5 Magazines Need?

Like any other part of a firearm, magazines need, both rifle and pistol magazines, require routine care, cleaning and maintenance, and that includes MP5 magazines.

In truth, the number of shooters that fastidiously clean their guns but habitually do not clean their magazines is somewhat concerning, considering the fact that the magazine is one of the most critical and sensitive moving parts of a semi-automatic firearm’s operation. With a faulty mag, or one that’s so dirty it won’t feed, you’ll go from a semi-automatic to a repeater real quick.

Therefore, in order to maintain the serviceability and operation of your MP5 magazines, you should keep them on a routine disassembly and cleaning schedule. Fortunately, you don’t need to clean them as frequently as you clean your gun itself, but a good way to make sure you don’t forget is just to clean your mags the same time you clean your gun.

Also, fortunately, disassembling and cleaning an MP5 magazine is easy and straightforward and doesn’t require any in-depth mechanical knowledge of firearm operation. These magazines also only have a few inner parts, which keeps things simple.

To clean an MP5 magazine, first, drop the mag and clear the gun, ensuring no live ammunition is present.

Then, remove the floor plate, being careful to detain it so that it and the mag spring don’t jump out the bottom. Then remove it, the mag spring and the follower, which should come out in sequence, and place these aside.

Next, wipe down the inside and outside of the mag tube. You should only need warm water and a mild detergent, since our magazines are electroplated to resist corrosion and fouling adhesion, but if you need a little better cleaning power, a solvent like Hoppe’s No. 9 is good here. This, paired with a microfiber rag and a nylon brush, should clear up any fouling on or in the mag tube.

Then, clean off the mag spring and follower in the same manner, being sure to dislodge and remove any fouling that has adhered to them. Left in place, fouling can be particularly damaging to the mag spring as it can accelerate corrosion on the most vital of the internal components.

Once you’ve cleaned the mag tube as well as the spring and follower, set them aside to dry before treating the mag spring with a drop of gun oil like Rem Oil. One drop is enough; this is not for lubrication but to seal off the mag spring against corrosion.

No other parts of the magazine need to be oiled, nor should they be. They are plated for corrosion resistance and applying oil will only serve to attract more dust and fouling.

Once you have cleaned and dried your MP5 magazine, reassemble it in the reverse order mentioned here.

We covered this topic in more depth previously. For more granular instructions on how to disassemble and clean an MP5 magazine, see our previous post, MP5 Magazine Maintenance: The Basics.
