What is 922r compliance?
Any gun imported into the USA, has to follow 922r compliance. Plain language of the rule states: There are certain rifles and shotguns that may NOT be imported because they are not “suitable for sporting purposes” and it is illegal to assemble one of these banned rifles or shotguns from too many imported parts. Currently this rule doesn’t apply to pistols, but if you have a pistol braced gun that you are submitting to the ATF to become an SBR, 922r becomes something that matters to you. While our current US made ZF-5s would be compliant, some of the older guns we imported from Turkey may not be.
Why is this important? You can build/assemble an otherwise illegal to import firearm IF you use enough US Made parts. The legislation say that no more than 10 of the parts listed below may be foreign. Currently, this is only important to understand if you are converting your pistol braced, imported firearm to an SBR, if you are leaving it in the pistol configuration, 922r should not affect you.
Some scenarios to consider: Let’s say you have a US made magazine in the gun. That’s 3 parts of the 922r list, and you have 9 imported parts on the gun. Technically you’d be compliant unless you used a foreign made magazine, at that point you would not be compliant. Another scenario might be you have exactly 10 imported parts on the gun, and you add a foreign made muzzle device. Technically, at this point, you would also be non-compliant. When considering which parts and how many to change, consider some of these instances, and also consider being well below the threshold of 10 parts so that there’s no gray area. Below we’ve listed some of our parts that will help you get to 922r compliance with parts Made in the USA.
Last thing, we are not a legal entity and this is only our understanding of the legislation, so if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to the ATF or a legal consultant. Gun University does a great job at explaining 922r in greater detail, and that article can be found HERE.
